School

Just a note: thank you to everyone who made it to the events. We raised enough money to build a school!  It’ll be in the Salavan Province, on Road No. 13 South.  We’re not going to torment the kids’ ability to learn phonetics by calling it The XKCD School, but we will be writing a dedication which will go on a plaque.  You guys made this happen — does anyone have any suggestions for what it should say?

Also, I’m currently happily hiding out for a while working on drawing and other projects, but I’ll hopefully be doing some less fundraise-y free signing events around Boston in the next month or two.  I’ll let you know once we have any places or dates!

    Terry Pratchett

Though that seems pretty inappropriate for a school. Or children.

Mr. Munroe, have you reached that point of internet popularity where women attempt to steal your sperm in hopes of inseminating themselves and producing your illegitimate child?

  4. The plaque should contain an encoded message that requires a decent amount of effort to solve. This way, when a student figures out what the plaque says, its message will have more impact for them. The only quote i can think of is something my grandpa always told me : “Ask not, get not.”

  7. It should be some kind of programming joke, I think. Also, the team should be the Velociraptors.

  8. I think it should have a programming joke of some kind on it. Also, one of the sports teams should be the Velociraptors.

  9. I agree it shouldn’t bash education and there should be a puzzle somewhere on it. You should put something on the sides of the plaque as well, reward the observant.
In terms of a quote i rather like the idea of it being from the web comic so i vote “The infinite possibilities each day holds should stagger the mind.” Then you can have a line of all the XKCD characters waving at the bottom.

  10. I absolutely love Elizabeth’s suggestion:

“To learn math and language, inquire within.
To learn romance and sarcasm, inquire without.”

  11. Eric’s suggestion sounds good. “Hello World!” might be cliché or something, but what if you had it on the outside of the main entrance? Upon entering the school, you’d be welcomed to the outside world.

  13. You have to put secret passageways in it. Can you even do that? I think you can do that.

As for how many, the way I see it, if I can go where I’m going and not pass by a single secret passageway, there’s a flaw in your design.

  14. It should definitely be a quote from the comic. Also, will the plaque have alt-text? :3

I like this one. But there should be too plaques/something on either side of the door.
So as you walk in you see the math and language part, and as you leave you see the romance and sarcasm bits.

  20. I cut this up out of what I liked most from other posts:

    Hello World

To learn math and language, inquire within.
To learn romance and sarcasm, inquire without

The infinite possibilities each day holds should stagger the mind

A million people can call the mountains a fiction,
yet it need not trouble you as you stand atop them

    Let’s think the unthinkable,
    let’s do the undoable,
let’s prepare to grapple with the ineffable itself,
and see if we may not eff it after all.

    Have fun

I think a great message for the puzzle/cipher would be:
A true gentleman leaves no puzzle unsolved

And of course make the mascot a velociraptor

  23. I think it should read:

Are all even numbers the sum of two primes?

It’s a mathematical problem that everyone can comprehend, but so far no one can solve. The kind of thing that inspires People to think.

Maybe one of the students grows up to be the mathematician to solve this Hilbert-Problem.

  24. I like the Mandela quote, partly because I think it’s easy to understand and accurately translate, but also because a Lao kid is more likely to have heard of Nelson Mandela than Goethe or Douglas Adams. On the same note, I’m not sure how well jokes or puns would come across; if it were my decision, I’d save the jokes for a coded or hidden message.

  29. It should be called “Awesome School” and the plaque should read “Donated by Randall Munroe (AKA Captain Epic), creator of xkcd. FDafdajkadfu”
