I’ll be in Newport News, Virginia this April 4th to give a talk at my old school, Christopher Newport University.

I’m really looking forward to it! The chaos of the past year and a half didn’t leave me with much time or energy for travel or events, so it’ll be fun to get out and meet people again. I’m also looking forward to seeing the campus, which I hear has changed substantially since I left.

The talk isn’t limited to CNU students, so if you live nearby, you’re welcome to come! Admission is free, but since space is limited, you’ll need to reserve tickets here.

  3. Hope everyone had fun in Newport News. I was there in April 2011 for a physics conference (DIS2011*), but didn’t see anything but Oyster Point “city centre”, JLAB and a short trip up to colonial Williamsburg.

  6. Occurred to me the other week (a while back actually, when you did 1048 ‘Emotion’), that I’ve been reading xkcd consistently since 2006. That’s six years of my life, from the age of 19 to 25. The somewhat formative years of my adulthood, one could say. It’s been a constant, there through the good, the bad and the confusing. My university halls room was covered by printed out comics! Through exciting crushes, stressful exams, disabling life-limiting illness, the deepest of friendships, poverty and homelessness, total independence, soul crushing betrayal, and finally getting my life back on track. Some of the best and worst times of the last six years have been marked by a creepily appropriate comic appearing at the same time. A relatively new one, 1042 ‘Never’, I suspect will stay with me for decades to come, any time one of the worst points in my life rears its ugly head. Been onwards and upwards from then, and ‘Never’ really cemented that past for me.

    Thanks for all your work, and I look forward to many more years to come. Perhaps in another six years I’ll be thinking about how crazy it is that there’s always been some spot-on xkcd comics for the past 12 years!
