I’ll be in Newport News, Virginia this April 4th to give a talk at my old school, Christopher Newport University.
I’m really looking forward to it! The chaos of the past year and a half didn’t leave me with much time or energy for travel or events, so it’ll be fun to get out and meet people again. I’m also looking forward to seeing the campus, which I hear has changed substantially since I left.
The talk isn’t limited to CNU students, so if you live nearby, you’re welcome to come! Admission is free, but since space is limited, you’ll need to reserve tickets here.
Hope to see you there!
Will you be meeting up at that day’s geohashing location? Lots of water in the graticule. Will you have a boat?

Hey! My friend goes there. Look for a tall thin guy dressed up like a pirate. Hat and all. Although I believe he only does that on Fridays.

On a totally different subject…you made The Economist! I laughed out loud this morning reading the article on page 18 of the US print edition for March 24th-30th. Their example of a passphrase is, you guessed it, “correct horse battery staple”! Unfortunately there is no attribution so I don’t know if it is an intentional in-joke or a an accidental homage. However it amused me either way.
What do you think of their position that a mnemonic password based on the first letters of a sentence is a better approach? Mostly because people aren’t good at choosing truly random phrases either.
I hope you enjoy the imitation/flattery.

Ok, so they did include a link (after prompted by comments even quicker than mine) in the online version of the article: http://www.economist.com/node/21551060

You’re going to need a map to find your way around CNU.
Seriously, it’s just that different from ’06. And the construction just never stops.

While you’re in the Newport News area, is there any way you can stop and give a talk at the College of William and Mary? I’d go to the CNU event, but I don’t have a car 😦

Any chance that you could stay a little longer? There are tons of Viriginia, Maryland, and D.C. fans that are on travel when you’re coming!
If that’s not possible, you should consider coming to the Small Press Expo. Jeph Jacques and many other web comic artists/writers will be there!

As I’m not going to register on the forum to make a single post, enjoy this creme egg trivia: The filling is an insulator. At least in UK eggs. A very good insulator too. I put two and a half kilovolts across that egg, and absolutly nothing. Light bulbs and grapes explode instantly upon connection to my high-voltage capacitor bank, but creme egg just doesn’t conduct at al.

I’m goin’. I’ll be headed out from West Point/Toano (Exit 220? on I-64). I don’t know the area too well, but if anybody wants a ride and they’re not too far out of the way for that commute, I’m up for carpoolin’. A fiver for gas would be nice, and if you know the area, I won’t miss the whole thing by getting lost, and hopefully won’t get towed/ticketed by campus police for parking in a hard hat area.

I’m pretty sure the comic up on the site is the incorrect comic. Last night the Umwelt comic was a Boston/California weather bit, and now the comic up is creating life in a lab. The mouse over is the same as before and seems to work with the original comic rather than the present comic.
Best,
Eric

Re: Umwelt
Clever!
I’ve discovered three variations so far:
I’m on the east coast, but a west coast proxy appeared to make no difference. I did not try an out-of-country proxy.
Firefox/Iceweasel/Gecko: Clouds.

Umwelt is the idea that because their senses pick up on different things, different animals in the same ecosystem actually live in very different worlds. Everything about you shapes the world you inhabit–from your ideology to your glasses prescription to your choice of web browser.
Chrome/Chromium: Earthquakes and Hurricanes.

IE/Safari/Opera/Other: Tortoise in the desert.
