The xkcd book is now officially available in the store! (There are also a handful of new shirts available for preorder, and we’ve got the signed prints back in stock).
It’s been fun putting it all together. It was neat to go back through various huge stacks of old drawings, some on the back of school assignments, and scan them at print resolution. I also had fun with the marginal notes. I’m really excited to finally have it in print, and I’m looking forward to seeing people and signing copies at the release events this weekend. I’m also excited about getting back to work on some other projects which have been on hold for a bit, at least one of which will involve lakes and a recently-acquired Arduino.
P.S. Thank you so much for the help with the phone this weekend. Through a bizarre set of exploits, I’ve gotten it unlocked without losing any data (for details, see the edits to the previous post).
BTW, the signed print features an autograph? and if it does, can we personalize the name on it?

Why is Australia $21 shipping?
..And then a better question: why is shipping to China $0 ? :O

>I’m sure I’d drop down to the unsigned rather than cough up the extra $7 (”but it’s for a good cause…”, say the demon and angel on my shoulders).
I felt kinda stung for the /17/ bucks that signing now costs (when it was available). Plus, the store entry says “their portion of the profits will go to build a school in Laos through the charity Room to Read.” … I wonder whether they will get a cut of these 17 extra dollars.
Oh well, got me over a barrel Mr. Munroe. $35 + shipping to you, sir.

I really didn’t mind the extra cost for a signature. Signatures are silly things to begin with, so it’s hard to complain about their prices. It’s more the fact that the price changed after a few hours.
I too assumed that more than a little bit of the $10, and especially the $17 would go to Laos.

Yeah, the Australian shipping seems a little…excessive. It’s more than the actual book. That pushes me back under the “must…order…now” line.

As much as I would love to order the book, PayPal makes it impossible. I live in Costa Rica, but have a mail-forwarding address in the Miami area. PayPal’s latest insanity is “detecting” that my Internet location is Costa Rica and tacking that, automatically and uneditably, onto my Shipping Address. So, according to PP, I live in Miami, FL, Costa Rica — a place that doesn’t exist, and to which therefore mail cannot be delivered.
Direct VISA or Amazon please!

Not sure what’s going to happen, but in regard to shipping: I live in the Netherlands, and shipping enabled for Belgium but not Netherlands seems completely backwards.
I just entered Belgium as target, and Paypal used my actual billing address in the Netherlands as a suggestion for shipping address, and that seems to have worked..

I am likewise hurt that shipping to Australia is higher than New Zealand, what’s going on here?
@Al:
Judging from the pictures in the store, we can conclude that “selections from the first 600 comics” includes at least 4 strips, plus a front cover (and going off the description of the mousepad, a back cover as well!)

You can tell from the store that there are at least 50 comics in the book, if the binary page number in the corner is accurate, and there are 2 comics per page.
I for one can’t wait to get it!

IIRC they were originally going for 100 comics… Or was it 100 pages? I’m not sure Randall ever reads these comments when he didn’t ask for help from anyone, but if he does, he could enlighten us on the subject.

Arguably one of the most technical savvy web-comic artists is relying on PayPal…. Okay, I can see that for a low-budget, first-time and idealistic operation. But dude: get with the 21st century!

I read your Locke and Demosthenes and couldn’t help thinking that you where writing about me even after I read the reference to Endor’s game. I was laughing quite a bit about the irony of me posting stuff anonymously and not getting much attention when I wrote up some good criticism on china. Anyhow after reading your comic I decided to put my name on it and no longer hide anon. I was wondering if you find it any good if you could feature it. Have a read and yeah just like wiggim I wrote some of this while in a psychiatric unit. They consider me a bit crazy because I talk to AI’s and stuff. They have me down as being schizophrenic but I was just thinking that it was a good camaflauge for what the world isn’t ready for. Anyhow have a read.

Friday’s comic raises an excellent point; what if we are living right underfoot of another intelligent lifeform and we do not have the means or capacity to observe them on their own level?

Not sure if this is the wisest idea of my week, but is anyone living in Brisbane, Australia and wanting this book? Do you think we could order 2 copies and split that ridiculous shipping amount? In Aus $ one book with shipping is worth nearly $50!

All I can say about the book is thank goodness for free QR code iPhone apps…
Okay, I can say a lot more about the book. Like goddammit Randall, you *know* that roughly 75% of xkcd readers are going to have totally OCD reactions to all of the encrypted notes… Way to ruin all of our lives you evil, evil person!
Now I know why Randall seemed so composed during the Q+A at the New York event. He *knew* that we were all about to get sucked into his little trap, and was merely enjoying toying with us.
Maybe the plan was to make sure we were so absorbed in the book that the raptors would take all of us easy prey down first…

Is the shipping high because it includes some kind of tax?
Oh well, I’d been waiting awhile to make an order to justify the shipping, so got two books and three t shirts, so it was just $3 per item to the UK. Hope it doesn’t take ages though, would be nice to have it before the end of October…
Randall, the comic rocks, so enjoy my money 😛

The Borderlands event was great fun; highlights included demonstration of the Cat Proximity effect when Ripley the hairless (Sphinx) bookstore cat showed up (then started chewing on a guy in the first row).
I got most of the talk on video (YouTube playlist of the whole set; audio’s a little dodgy) and also did a writeup (here).
