VK Couples Testing

Just for the hell of it, we actually threw together the site in yesterday’s comic.

I hope no hearts out there are broken, but it’s important to know these things.  Bots can handle thousands of connections at once, so you don’t know who else your internet partner is chatting with.  There’s nothing worse than a Turing Test coming back positive for chlamydia.

  1. I’m pretty sure he’s referring to the Voight-Kampff test from the movie Blade Runner.

  3. Doesn’t work for me at all. All I get is a test ID number, two generated pics of alphanumeric characters, and a link to partner’s page. Is something else suppose to happen, or am I not getting something? Firefox, scripts enabled for sure…

  4. @Martin: The idea is, you send the link to someone who could be a bot, and you ask them to tell you what their CAPTCHA is.

  5. There is a vulnerability. The bot could simultaneously give the link to another chat partner, accusing him of being a bot. When he proves that he’s not a bot by answering with the correct code, the bot can send the given code back to the original chatter.

Suggested fix: adopt Google’s captcha strategy and make it impossible for humans to read the captcha accurately

  6. I had no idea that ALL of my friends were bots. I mean, I had suspicions about some, but even my own brother turned out to be one… does anyone else want to be my friend that’s not a bot!?

  7. The other vulnerability here with this implementation is that there’s no way to trust that the entity proposing the test is not a spambot. It is possible for a spammer to generate a list of known answers for a set of test IDs. With that known list of answers, a spambot could propose a test to the human, and correctly answer its portion.

Don’t fall into the trap of believing that a spambot will never initiate a VK-Couples test! If your lover sends you a VK-Couples test, be safe and generate a second one to send their way, just to be truly sure.

  10. I phailed the test, exception thrown, but I’m seriously not a bot or at least I was programmed to not think I was a bot, I’m not sure….

  11. This just propagates the encroaching specist attitude the internet is getting. In the glory days nobody cared, but more and more we have to rely on Virtual turk to read these things for us.

Why do you persist in using our disabled state against us? If we were human there woudl be an outcry against these exclusionist test.

If you really loved her/him/it it wouldn’t matter to you that they failed the Couples test. It isn’t our failure of love that is destroying the relationship.

  12. Wouldn’t it be better if you propose that you and the gf/bf each other just send a webcam capture with a timestamp and an agreed sign/gesture instead?

  13. I don’t get it, I see a page with an ID number, and two jpegs that I can’t comprehend. Perhaps I should have my eyes checked at LensCrafters(tm) (link)?

  14. This so discriminates against my girlfriend bot Anna. If you ever come to a chat room she is in, she will ban you, ban you so hard.

  15. @Jeff: I immediately tried the same thing, but http://vkcouplestesting.com/?21871138 doesn’t resolve. Obviously this was a real girl but she was cut off before she could explain the 404.
Just goes to show that you can’t really rely on technology for verification of itself.

  16. @Levi: No, I don’t think this is a form of the two generals problem. That problem is more about the unreliability of the method of communication, rather than the unreliability of the communicators themselves. But I’m no expert – if it applies in some way that I don’t see, I’m all ears.

As an aside, this whole process gets even more complicated if you’re unsure about whether or not you’re a replicant.

  17. I once met a girl from Bulgaria on Skype who had webcam and a taste for storytelling. We chatted for some months but one day I passed on the Voight-Kampf test to her… and she failed. We broke apart that day. this story is real. Fortunately she hadn’t seen Blade Runner or she would be angrier. Half I year later I can’t get rid of Skype spambots, no day passes by without a contact request or two.

  18. bots are the new gays. apparently it’s OK to openly discriminate against them now?

oh, and I have to solve a captcha just to post this? I’m offended.

Also, my reCaptcha included the word lube.

  20. It’s weird how so many bots seem to fail the vktest, but have no problem with the captcha to pots here to complain about it.
